What you should know about pet transportation

When you move to another city or country, you have to face with a number of problems. One of these problems is how to transport your beloved pet, treated like a family member, safely and with minimal stress for the animal. You should also arrange a transportation in a way to comply with countless rules and regulations defining how it should be done.

If you are going to travel by air, you should know the following. It is allowed to transport in the passenger cabin of an aircraft dogs accompanied by a cynologist, guide dogs for blind and deaf passengers, provided with a collar and a muzzle. A guide dog must stay at the feet of the passenger / dog handler inside a cabin. Seats for the passengers with guide dogs are located at the end of the cabin. It is also allowed to carry small animals, weighting together with the means of transportation not more than 8 kg. Bird cages should be covered with a dense opaque tissue. Animals, which weight along with a cage or kennel exceeds 8 kg, are transported only in baggage and cargo compartments of an aircraft (guide dog is the only exception).

When transporting animals, a passenger is responsible for a pet, so all necessary documents (certificates, permits, etc.), provided by applicable law, must be submitted. Airline would not be liable for injury, loss, delay, illness or death of such animals in the case of a denial of their import into the country of destination or transit, unless such damage was caused by the negligence of the airline.

Alive pets and domestic animals, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. are accepted for transportation in a cargo compartment of an air craft. Number of animals per container is established in accordance with requirements specified in the TIM / TIMATIK of destination countries, and the recommendations of IATA. The total weight of such animals together with the container must not exceed 32 kg. One container with alive animal / animals is allowed for one passenger.

Transportation of pets (dogs, cats) and birds is carried out by prior agreement with the airline, so, planning animal’s transportation, be sure to inform the agent at the time of booking online or directly by buying a ticket at sales office, but not later than 24 hours before departure time. It is allowed to transport pets only – cats, dogs and birds in a cabin of an aircraft. Any other animals will not be accepted for carriage in baggage and hand luggage and can be carried as a cargo. To transport an animal / a bird, a passenger must have a packaging container (made of hard plastic or wood) or a metal cage with air access. The size of a container should allow the animal to stand up and turn around. Container (cage) should be provided with a reliable locking device, the bottom of the container (cage) should be covered with absorbent (water-resistant) material. Bird cages should be covered with a dense, light impermeable cloth.

As you see there are so many rules and regulations you must comply with to transport your pet. Be sure to contact your airline to specify all the details. This will allow you to avoid misunderstanding and to transport your friend safely.
